Choosing a Corporate Caterer: the practical checks

Once you've got a shortlist, a few practical checks will tell you more than any menu tasting.

Ask around internally

Start with colleagues or contacts who've booked catering before. Their experience of communication, punctuality and how issues were handled on the day tells you more than an online review.

Set your budget first

Know what you're prepared to spend before you start requesting quotes, and ask each caterer for a full breakdown so you're comparing like for like.

Confirm the date properly

Check availability early, and get written confirmation once you're ready to book. Don't rely on a verbal agreement for your event date.

Read the contract properly

Check exactly what's included: staffing, equipment, VAT, and any charges that apply outside standard hours. Query anything that isn't clear before you sign.

Ask what they specialise in

Most caterers have particular strengths. Ask what they're best known for, and whether your type of event fits their experience.

Check with your venue

Many venues have a list of caterers they've worked with before, and know the site's layout, access and any restrictions. Working with a caterer who already knows the venue, or is prepared to visit it beforehand, avoids problems on the day.
